Leadership ยท case study
Trip leader, Avian Experiences
Twenty strangers, one road, and the job of making it unforgettable.
Avian Experiences is an Ahmedabad travel company that runs group trips into the Himalaya. For a season alongside college I led those trips as a freelance trip leader: twenty or so travellers who had never met, a route through the mountains, and a week in which everything that could go wrong had to be handled before anyone noticed.
A trip leader is with the group from the first morning to the last night. The itinerary is the easy part. The job is the people.
A trip, day by day
The first morning
Twenty strangers, their luggage, their worries and their expectations, on one bus. Names learned by lunch.
The day's plan
Where we stop, when we eat, who needs the altitude taken slowly, what the weather is doing to the road.
The day's problems
A sick traveller, a closed pass, a hotel that lost the booking. Solved quietly, with the office on the line.
The experience
The sunrise worth waking for, the dhaba worth the detour, the story at the campfire. The things that turn a schedule into a trip.
The last night
Everyone home with a story.
What came of it
- Three trips led across autumn and winter, one of them through snow.
- It is where I learned that leading is mostly listening, and that the plan matters less than how you handle the day it breaks.
